Country Code Domains Dominate DN Journal’s New Weekly Sales Report

Country code domains turned in the strongest performance we have seen since starting our weekly domain sales report over five years ago. The biggest ccTLD sale of the year led a country code charge that gave ccTLDs 12 of the 20 positions on our latest Top 20 sales chart.

Great Domains Still Available – Bid NOW Online!

Aftermarket Although the TRAFFIC Down Under Conference is officially over, it doesn’t mean that you have missed your opportunity to bid and acquire some quality domains. As witnessed during the auction, the No Reserve and the .AU names were hot commodities spurring on active bidding. There remain quality domains that are still reasonably priced. Below are current stats on available names, bids, estimated search results, click pricing and commentary.

Aftermarket.com Down Under extended auction is available until November 27, 2008, 9:00 AM AU EST / November 26, 2008, 3:00 PM PST.

JobListings.com.au $3,000.00 Common search term currently with 3 .AU advertisers.
BajaAdventures.com $100.00 Current bid – $525. Estimated 260 Google searches. Plenty of adventures to be had in Baja. This hugely popular travel destination is full of tour groups and guides.
CalgaryPersonals.com $350.00 Current bid – $350. Google click price estimated at $1.52. Super high-quality geo in a massively competitive market area.
LastYear.com $350.00 Current bid – $550. Large Google search over 800 results. People love looking back at reviews, Top 10’s, news and photo highlights. Solid, brandable, recognizable two-worder with value in the highly lucrative ‘review’ site segment.
ChulaVistaProperty.com $500.00 Priced right. Large California city with growing population and development. Term gets +4,000 searches a month on Google alone and has an advertising base looking for this specific traffic.
HispanicKids.com $500.00 Fastest growing market group in America, one can think of dozens or so uses of this name and thousands of possible buyers/developers.
Enter.com.au $1,250.00 REDUCED PRICE – $1,250! Bargain for a generic word.
HouseRefi.com $1,500.00 Combined search terms results approximately 900, with $24+ click price. Refi is big, as you would expect, and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future. ‘Refi’ names are exceedingly expensive and rare.
HungerControl.com $1,500.00 Top term in a multi-billion dollar, largely recession-proof industry. People actually gain more weight in recessions. Highly generic, competitive and brandable.
Telecard.com $1,500.00 Current bid – $1,500. Healthy click price just under $2. Almost a one-worder for great biz, product and/or concept specific. If it doesn’t already exist, it will.
NewTLD.com $1,800.00 Introduction of any ‘new’ TLD or .new TLD, makes this a solid listing. ICANN’s plans to introduce hundreds of new TLDs make this name perfect for a business focused on the new TLD space.
IndianaHome.com $1,933.00 Just under 2500 Google search results and $3 click price. Rare enough to see a state ‘home’ name, even more rare and valuable at this price – barely a SLICE of the commission on a single home sale.
ExamServices.com $2,000.00 Roughly 480 search results. Exam prep services are highly searched. SAT, PSAT, GRE, Postal Exam and hundreds of exams have online tutors and prep services.
Eternally.com $3,500.00 Single word for the gigantic ‘religious’ industry. Again, another positive brand, positive imagery at a brilliant price – will last forever too.
FixedHomeLoans.com $3,500.00 Estimated Google click price $19. Mortgage names are rare, HUGELY profitable and rarely available at these price points.
Somehow.com $3,500.00 Search results in nearly 4400 hits! Terrific single word domain that could apply to dozens of industries but could work for research, fitness, therapy and more. Positive word that sells ’solutions’.
Sello.com $4,000.00 Spanish domains, which continue to grow in resale value and traffic, rarely get this solid at this price. This is Spanish for ‘Stamp’ so it serves as product specific generic and/or brandable generic.
AccentTables.com $5,000.00 Combined singular and plural search term results in well over 10,000. Product specific home decor items like this are a rarity. Netshops or CSNstores owns most of them and have developed businesses on them. Perfect for an ecommerce development
DigitalVideos.com $5,000.00 Nearly 10,000 search results. Begs for development and monetization or even speculation as ‘digital videos’ covers many areas beyond just YouTube into production, software, promotion and more.
SkiEurope.com $5,000.00 Current bid – $6,200. Just under $2.00 approximate click price. This selection was a no-brainer – obviously a huge and competitive industry and this is one of the best names in it. No plural competition, travel specific with very high-end amounts per sale. Generic, ‘all inclusive’ travel term – meaning it opens potential to many services (air, hotel, ski pass, rail) and many more end-users/sponsors/advertisers.
BroadcastingSchool.com $6,000.00 Almost $7.00 Google click price. Own the traffic for highly specific education domain covering a sought-after and competitive field – lots of programs and advertisers cover this one.
Carpenters.net $6,722.00 75,000 estimated search results in singular and plural combination. Rare single-word premium generic for large and needed service-area. Tons of SEO value.
Courtdate.com $7,000.00 REDUCED - $7,000! Estimated Google search returns 1300. One of the finest and most recognizable legal phrases – even its implication signifies immediate need for legal services. Huge potential buyer pool.
iUS.com $25,000.00 Current bid – $25,000. Over 6500 search results. Three-letter dot com – hot commodity. Another white squirrel-like rarity, a solid LLL combo that is not “”czf”” or “”t8q”” but brandable and memorable and competitively priced. Kind of name that gets lots of offers, never loses its value, stands out from the rest. Even more so with the recent growth in values of top-level “”i”” names.
Medicinas.com (medicines) $25,000.00 Spanish for ‘medicines’, This is another category-killer at a brilliant offering and at a time when the industry is in transition and its monetization (and audience) will grow again.
Coed.com $50,000.00 Roughly 33,000 search results on singular and plurarl. Great four-letter, one word domain that can apply to mainstream or adult or even products/services/education and personals or housing. College based services are easily marketed and highly profitable.

Many participants likely noticed challenges with the auction itself. First, it started late due to the hotel venue AV technical problems. That was frustrating as it created rushed auction in an attempt to get through all the names. Then, with a network issue from the hotel to our servers in Seattle, we were noticing really significant delayed response from the server. There was considerable testing done prior to the auction. During the testing, the latency between Australia and the auction platform round-trip was approximately 5-8 seconds. However, we were noticing during the actual auction latency increased to 20 seconds or more. We were concerned about data syncing issues. We took a break to stabilize the network and databases in Seattle and then resumed again. Add to those two delay factors, the very active .AU domain name lots, time ran out. The initial 20 minute delay hampered our ability to go through the whole auction list. We apologize to all of the sellers and buyers for this situation.

However, online bidding will remain open until November 26, 2008 for lots that were not sold. Many of the names already have bids and remains some top quality domains at great prices:

BroadcastingSchool.com
Athletic.com.au
IUS.com
AntiItch.com
AccentTables.com
Somehow.com
LastYear.com

The full list of available names is on Aftermarket.com. Don’t miss this opportunity to purchase some of these great domains!

Australia is for Auctions

The Aftermarket.com event which we have been featuring here is not the only game in town. This past evening local time (Wednesday, November 19) started off with a bang at the Internet Commerce Association Charity Auction. Co-sponsors Fabulous.com and T.R.A.F.F.I.C., joint organizers of the T.R.A.F.F.I.C. Down Under event, held a charity event to auction ten premium domain names. The revenue will be donated to the Internet Commerce Association (ICA), a non-profit advocate for the domain name industry.

Fabulous.com, had generously donated domains valued at over $60,000 to the auction. These domains were auctioned without reserves. Rick Latona Auction (www.RickLatona.com) had also donated their expertise and time to manage the charity auction.

Speaking of Rick Latona:

Our good friends at Rick Latona will be hosting their own Live Auction Thursday, November 20th, at T.R.A.F.F.I.C. Down Under. Local time for those of you not good with the math will be Wednesday, November 19th, starting at 9:00 PM Eastern Standard Time.

More information can be found by going to: http://www.ricklatona.com/auctions/.

Psst, Wanna Swap a Link?

Ever get one of these spam emails? (Names and details removed to protect the spammy)

Dear Webmaster,

My name is _________, and I run the web site ________________.com:

I recently found your site http://www.jonathancrossfield.com and am very
interested in exchanging links. I’ve gone ahead and posted a link to your
site, on this page:

__________________.com/linkmachine/resources/resources_business.html

As you know, reciprocal linking benefits both of us by raising our search
rankings and generating more traffic to both of our sites. Please post a
link to my site as follows:

Title: _____________________

URL: http://www._________.com/

Description: ________________

Once you’ve posted the link, let me know the URL of the page that it’s on,
by entering it in this form:

http://www.link to form

You can also use that form to make changes to the text of the link to your
site, if you’d like.

Thank you very much,

Think I responded to this email with a link? If you can assemble the words hell, chance and snowball into a sentence, you may have the answer.

My personal website receives a handful of these every month in various shapes and forms. Yet most conform to a list of major online marketing no-nos.

  • They are all very obviously form letters with no true insight into my website
  • I am addressed as ‘webmaster’ despite my name appearing prominently throughout the site – it’s my domain name for pity’s sake!
  • The email makes no reference to any content or gives any other indication that a real person has ever visited the site.
  • The website making the offer is in a completely different industry to mine, meaning any link exchange would be woefully irrelevant.
  • The website makes erroneous claims about how reciprocal links benefit both websites in the search engines
  • Often, all of the details are not filled in, so that nonsensical phrases such as “I visited your website, [insert name of website], yesterday,” appear.

Swapping links has been going on ever since webmasters worked out that links had an influence on the search engines. Yet, after a decade of search engine optimization improvements, the search engines are clever enough to weed out spammy exchanges and inappropriate links.

Exchanging links with a casino site or some equally inappropriate online neighbourhood can actually have a very detrimental affect on your website. Links to and from websites earmarked as ‘spammy’ or engaging in suspicious linking activity can incur site penalties that lower your appearance in the search engines and lose you customers.

These spammy link exchange emails are extremely common, meaning that enough people must fall for them to be worthwhile. But you should never swap links with a website you would not naturally choose, especially when they can’t even manage the courtesy of a personal email or any real interest in the success of your site. You can bet that the website making the offer has a crappy ‘resources’ page stuffed with hundreds of links, making them near worthless in passing on any benefit to other sites. But those sites that do happen to link back may well have far fewer links, meaning their link carries more weight and helps them rise higher.

Their site wins, your site loses – just as you would expect.

Less obviously spammy than Viagra or breast enhancements or ‘genuine’ university degrees, these emails are designed to appeal to the inexperienced webmaster. Send them to the junk mail folder where they belong and continue using professional link building services and organic techniques.

Final Notes Before Heading to Australia for Traffic Down Under and Kudos to Jeff Kupietzky

I’ll be spending the entire weekend flying to Australia to cover next week’s T.R.A.F.F.I.C. Down Under conference for you. I posted some show notes before heading out and also details on a well deserved promotion for Oversee.net’s Jeff Kupietzky who has been named company President.
